Most quilters I know name their quilts.  I've named all of mine and usually the name has something to do with what's happening in my life.  So when I began quilting again last Spring, when Covid hit, I called all of my quilts Corona quilts, but really only this one deserves to be called Corona. 

This is the 6th quilt I've made since Covid hit, and it's the only one that kind-of-sort-of resembles the virus, if you squint your eyes and look at it while standing on your head.  Or not.  But since it's a jumble of loud fabric scraps I think the name fits.

Pretend those are stars on that picture of the virus...surely now you can see it, right?  Well whatever, this quilt will forever be known as the Real Corona Quilt, like it or not.  I just finished my 8th Corona quilt top, if you're counting, and I'm starting a new one tomorrow.  Why this sudden burst of activity?!?!  Well let me tell you, I discovered that I CAN sew and watch Korean soap operas, while reading sub-titles, after all!  This might be my one and only real talent, and I could not be more proud of myself.  I tell you, it's the little things that make all the difference in life!!

I decided to audition a few spots for the Real Corona quilt...the porch was almost the spot but then I thought better of it.  Someone might wander off with it, so a more secure spot was needed.

 Next I tried it out in the entry, tossed over the handrail because I liked the look of it with the hydrangeas.  It hung out here for a few days before I got tired of it and decided it needed to be another "deck quilt."  We have several quilts on our deck because it does get cold here at night and the mister likes to sit outside in the dark and watch the bats...it's his latest obsession.

I managed to capture the mister singing Red Solo Cup to Rosie...such cute daddy-daughter bonding time.  The mister didn't much care for this quilt because it wasn't big enough to cover him.  It truly is a lap quilt, measuring just 58-inches square.  Perhaps if the quilt didn't get "high-centered" on the mister it would have covered him better...

The backing fabric is from Hobby Lobby, if you haven't checked them out for fabric you should - they do have quality cottons and they carry the entire range of Kona solids, which can be hard to find. (The closest Hobby Lobby to me is in Issaquah.)  Plus their prices are much less than quilt shops, I think this fabric was $7 a yard which is a far cry better than the $13 a yard quilters usually have to spend!

The Real Corona quilt is already a favorite - unlike the virus, the quilt is bright and happy (unlike my usual quilts!)  It was made entirely from fabric I had in my stash as the fabric stores where closed when I started this one.  

When the rains return and summer is just a memory, this is where the Real Corona quilt will end up - on the quilt bed in the Imaginary Baby's Room.  It will fit right in with all the others, just waiting to be loved.  You all have a room like this, no?

This is the 5th Corona quilt I made and I'm happy it's now quilted and bound.  This simple quilt was a very long time in the making!  My first trip to Hawaii was with my mom in 1995, we visited the Big Island and the red carpet was rolled out all the way!  My mom was there on business and the Hyatt Waikaloa (at the time) really wanted her to bring her business to them so they treated her and me like queens!  From the day at the spa to the dinners to the helicopter ride over Kilauea, it was all magical, well maybe not Kilauea, I had nightmares about that for a long time!

One of my souvenirs was a small bundle of Hawaii fabrics.  I really wanted to make a Hawaiian quilt when I got back home, but life got in the way and those Hawaiian fabrics were soon tucked out of sight.  Two years later I was lucky enough to go back to the Big Island, this time with both of my parents and my sister for mom's big meeting.  Once again we were treated like royalty, and everything I didn't do on my first visit I was able to do on the second.  By the end of my trip I considered myself a true Hawaiian expert on shave ice, mahi mahi, Spam musubi, poke, po'i, and drinks with umbrellas in them, and Hawaiian fabric!

This pattern, while simple, is called Postcards From Hawaii and those rectangles are supposed to be 3 x 5-inches but I cut them wrong, no surprise there, right?  They're not "legal" postcard size so I couldn't really call this a postcard quilt - now it's my Aloha quilt.  Along with the fabrics from my first two trips to Hawaii, I have fabric from some of the mister's Hawaiian shirts, those that mysteriously shrunk in the dryer and I have fabrics from friends. 

After several more trips to Hawaii, buying fabric each visit, I know I had enough fabric to make TEN Hawaiian quilts...something needed to be done!  Either I had to stop going to Hawaii or I had to start making Hawaiian quilts!  The fabrics were moved to a place in my workroom where I couldn't ignore them - but still I managed to do just that!  And I ignored them to the point that about half of the fabric fell off my work table into a bin behind it...and there it sat, quietly mocking me I'm sure!  It took Corona Virus to get me going!    I finally DO get going and I don't have enough fabric!  I looked and looked but couldn't find my fabrics!!  And my workroom had been cleaned!!!  Thanks to friends I was able to get it finished and after another search of my workroom, I found the escaped fabrics!!!  I had placed some batting scraps on top of the bin where the fabrics fell...the "batting bin" so I didn't think to look there again!  There was a giant forehead slap right after finding it!  The backing for this quilt is from IKEA, they carry great fabric (on rolls) and it's really reasonably priced.  Most of it is heavy, canvas-like, but this fabric is 100% cotton, light-weight and I thought it was the perfect backing so when I saw it in 2018 I bought it, really not knowing what I was going to use it for.  When I finally got around to making this quilt I remembered this fabric and it reminded me of all the colors of flowers you can see in Hawaii - it was perfect!

When I started working on this quilt last April I was hoping to have it finished in time for Seafair, thinking it would be the prefect summer picnic quilt.  Well guess what?  It was finished in time but Seafair was cancelled.  The parades, the parties, the Blue Angels soaring over Lake Washington, the Hyro-plane races - all cancelled.  This is the week of summer that I look forward to the most - I block everything from my calendar the last week of July and plan our picnic feast on the shores of Lake Washington to watch the Blues fly.  Woe is me.  

Normally I would just tell myself, cheer up, Seafair and the Blues will be back next year...but with the way things are going, will they?!?!?  Will we ever be able to fly to Hawaii again and not have to spend 2 weeks in a hotel room eating Spam from room service while watching surfers from our window?!?  The pandemic is a great equalizer, what would be first world problems are now everyone's problems!  So mask up and wash your hands and please keep your distance...I'll be at home watching Netflix trying to use up the rest of my 25 year old Hawaiian fabric!

Sometimes when I start working on a quilt I have no idea who I'm making it for.  Either I love the pattern and want to make the quilt for fun or I have tons of a specific fabric that needs to be used up.  Both were the case when I started this simple blue and white "Chinese Coin" quilt.

When I finished the blue and white top, which was the first Corona quilt I made, I still didn't know where this quilt would end up.  I have no ssr小工具网址 in my house to speak of and so I figured the quilt itself would eventually tell me where it would go, quilts do that you know.  

The quilt did tell me, via Instagram, where it should go!  I posted a picture of the quilt top and a long-time friend commented that it reminded her of the 安卓ssr小工具下载her son would choose after his many chemo treatments.  Duncan, her sweet little caboose was just two years old when he passed away from brain cancer, he would be 8 years old now.  I immediately remembered that I was going to send Shauna a quilt for Duncan when I first heard he was sick.  But I didn't, life got in the way.  Then after he passed I remembered I was going to send a quilt to Shauna, something for her to wrap up in or to cry into if she needed it; FYI, quilts make great Kleenex.  But I didn't, life got in the way again.  I honestly don't know what could have been more important but I soon forgot about it and every now and then when I would remember I decided that too much time had passed and it might seem weird?  What's weird is that's what I thought!  Finally I came to my senses!

Shauna sent me this picture of her daughter wrapped up in the quilt.  And let me tell you, nothing could have made my heart feel better!!!  This is what a quilter lives for!  Knowing someone loves the quilt she made - that's the cherry on top.  In a strange way I guess I need to thank Covid for keeping me at home long enough so I could finally make a quilt for Duncan.  But that's the only thing I'm going to thank it for!  

It's finished!  Quilted and bound and ready for those cool summer nights!  I started this pineapple quilt after seeing several versions on Pinterest.  I stole the pattern just by eye-balling it, which is perfectly legal, yes?  I couldn't love this quilt more because it reminds me of happier times and places, which I why I wanted a pineapple quilt to begin with.

This is one of my "Covid quilts" because it was finished during the quarantine so I can look back on being locked-down and know that I at least accomplished something besides watching everything on Netflix!  Instead of the Oscars this year I think there should be an awards show for the people who watched the most TV.  I would definitely win something, maybe a badge or a ball-cap, I'd even settle for a scrunchy, just something I could wear with pride knowing I chose TV over jumping off the bridge!

The backing is from IKEA, it's a bit loud and proud but it's what I had in my stash.  But here's what really important to know about the backing, it's STRAIGHT!  That rarely happens around here so the front of this quilt might not be seen because I'm just so happy the back turned out even!  

I like to sit on this bench and do crossword puzzles while I'm waiting on the mister to swoop in from Global Headquarters.  He's not as excited about driving to work as he has been because now there are more and more cars on the road.   A few weeks ago it was just him and the Amazon guy.  Crossword puzzles on the deck in the afternoon is something I look forward to if it's not raining, it's my new happy place, until the mister arrives and announces he's going to retire - what's a 5 letter word for where I will go if he does?  CRAZY!

Years ago I saw a skirt in Nordstrom made of ties.  I wanted to buy it for my daughter but it was $275 which made me quickly come to my senses and I kept walking.   I couldn't get the skirt out of my mind though so I decided to make her one.  The mister didn't have enough ties that I could steal so I checked ebay and ordered 200 ties for about $50.    Here's a picture of her skirt that I made, which she loved but she eventually out grew it (it's a size 4) and years later when I was visiting her home I found it in her garage in a pile with things she "didn't know what to do with."  (You can read more about how I made the skirt by clicking here.)  Well I just couldn't let it languish there so I grabbed it and brought it home with me.  

Those ties from ebay turned into a skirt and then they turned into an ottoman cover.  It's one of my very favorite creations and we have it in our family room still!  I love knowing that it's really a skirt (with just the removal of a few stitches it is!)  (It looks a little lumpy/askew in the picture but that's just because Rosie jumped on it right before I took the picture and I didn't fix it...dang dog!)   Anyway, you can probably guess I didn't use all 200 ties so I had a lot of ties left.  They have come in handy over the years in many different ways.

When I was asked to teach a lesson to the ladies at church I had this brilliant idea to sew the ties together end-to-end and roll them up into a big ball.  During the lesson the ladies had to toss the ball of ties around the room, while hanging onto to a piece, so they were all connected.  I thought I was so clever!  After the lesson I rolled up the ties into the ball and took them home where they sat on my shelf for about 10 years.    

With Corona time on my hands I decided it was time I made myself a tie quilt.  I didn't think it through.  Didn't think about taking the guts out of the ties to make things easier.  Didn't think about washing the ties first either.  I just started sewing the ties to a muslin foundation and I kept on sewing, block after thick block.  

What I have ended up with is a quilt that weighs 安卓ssr小工具下载 and it doesn't have the backing or binding on yet!!!  It's like one of those weighted blankets and, if I do say so myself, it's spectacular!  I love it so very much.  It's silky as almost all of ties are made of silk (there are a few cotton and one or two polyester ties) and it will be incredibly warm. 

I will have to hand-tie this quilt but until the shops open back up I have no idea what to back it with.  I do know that I won't be putting any batting inside, it doesn't need another layer for sure!  Rosie loves this quilt and insisted on having her picture taken with it, I suppose now she will think it's hers!

After all of my tie projects I still had about 100 ties so I thought that would be plenty for a quilt.  I was wrong, yet again.  Some of the ties (as you can imagine when you buy them cheaply on ebay) were actually too ugly to use; they had neon colors or weird words or pictures.  Some of the ties were badly stained so if I could I would cut around the stains and use part of the ties.  Also, some of the ties were incredibly skinny at the ends so they were not really useable either.  

When I was about 3/4's of the way done I realized I didn't have enough long pieces of ties left.  Due to Corona all of the flea/antique/used clothing stores are closed so I put out a request on Facebook to see if any of my friends would be willing to go through their husbands ties and donate a few to me.  And they did!  (Thank you Marsha and Nancy!)  Since this already weighs so much I decided I couldn't make it any larger, as it is it measures 56-inches by 60-inches, so it really is the perfect lap size.

My tie quilt is now at the top of my "to do" pile.  There are 4 quilts and one pillow in this pile (not counting the ones on the bottom of the shelf) in need of a repair of some sort and the rest are tops that need to be finished.  Our lockdown will continue for another 2 1/2 weeks so I just might get one of them quilted and bound...hope springs eternal!
